Brandt Cormorant

On net posts, rocks or any convenient perch these large, conspicuous birds can be seen along the Pacific coast.

The first impression of indolence, holds only as long as circumstances require. They are not slow when danger looms, diving with ease and swiftness.

The nesting areas are battlefields. Ravens and Gulls are constantly on the alert for the slightest chance to steal eggs or young and the forays are so often carried to a fatal ending that only persistent defense enables Cormorants to survive.

They often spread wings and tail to the sun and seem as anxious to keep themselves dry as they are ready to enter water.
