A small flock of these wanderers hove to under the Eva and Annie's stern, one November day when we were "baiting up." They fought over refuse we threw overboard. My dorymate watched them sideways — the baited hooks fell in regular succession into the tub — and remarked: "Listen to the spalpeens — ivery wan tellin' the other ter g'wan! g'wan! g'wan!" And that is an apt description of their wild call.
