Eared Grebe

An EARED GREBE town on a western lake is a spectacular sight. There are no officials to keep citizens under control for all members of the community obey unwritten laws.

Finley says he counted one hundred and sixty-five homes within an area of three acres. Nests were built of milfoil growing in the shallow water. These slender stems were pulled together from a distance of several feet and the long red stems kept alive by water presented a line of deep red against the background of green tules.

The colony was all bustle and hurry at his approach, covering the eggs and the treasures were completely hidden when the nests were reached.
