These Gulls reverse the usual migration route, traveling south, within 18 degrees of the equator, to breed. The honeymoon extends two weeks or more and courting antics are most ludicrous. They are clever fishermen and understand necessity of approaching a school of fish from the rear so as not to scare them into sounding. Altho capable of catching their food they permit Pelicans or Boobies that honor if they are in the vicinity. They work in pairs close to a Pelican and when the awkward bird throws its head up, a Gull seizes any part of the fish that is exposed and snatches it from the pouch.
In Winter, Pacific coast from northern Washington, south to Central America. Breeds on Pacific coast of Mexico.
