The HUDSONIAN is the silent member of the genus, voicing a soft chirp of "Sandpiper chatter" when alarmed. Sanford found them common on Magdalene Islands where their undulating flight easily differentiated them from all other waders. They quickly learned the danger behind a blind and foiled all attempts at their destruction. The line of southern migration carries them outside Atlantic shores and only after a hard "easterly blow" are they seen on the coast. They probably take the same route as the Golden Plover, direct to the West Indies and South America.
Females less intensely colored than figure in plate.
North America, chiefly eastern part. Breeding range unknown, only one set of eggs (from Mackenzie Bay) having been found.
