Louisiana Clapper Rail

Pope contributes an interesting note on food habits of the LOUISIANA RAILS: — on warm days "fiddler" crabs came out of their holes in numbers and were eagerly devoured by the Rails. The large claw usually was removed and with a big crab this was accomplished with another Rail's help. It was not always satisactory because the assistant often swallowed the crab, leaving the finder holding the claw!

Pope could tell when a "norther" was coming as the Rails heralded its approach by persistent clattering around hours before its arrival.
