Purple Finch

Westward the waters of Casco Bay glowed. The thin thread of far Falmouth shores interrupted the glory only to reveal deeper color above. Rocks and tiny low tide beaches at our feet caught and held the warm light, even spruce trees were enslaved. While we sat silent under the Summer evening's benediction, around us Purple Finches voiced the spirit of the hour with their sweet strong music.

On quivering wings over our heads, the evening hymn filled the air with sound which accentuated the beauty and peace of the moment. Sunset, music, the Isles of Maine and Thou — another world!

Where cedars or other conifers grow in small groves, PURPLE FINCHES will be found altho while migrating they are apt to stop over in any location which hints food. Our small lawn is often crimson with them in late March and they are almost as welcome as Song Sparrows. Sometimes, in Spring, females voice a faint imitation of the male's song but not often.

They are hardy, self-reliant birds which will evade destructive agencies working havoc with many other species.
