Stilt Sandpiper

These SANDPIPERS probably are more common than supposed because usually they are among Lesser Yellowlegs and consequently escape notice. I caught one "out of company" among a flock of Least Sandpipers on the margin of Shinnecock Bay, in August. The bird seemed less active and more precise in its movements than the busy little 'Pipers but came within thirty feet of me. When the others shifted their hunting ground it went off with a mellow fue.
