Yellowlegs

Altho the main flight during Spring migration goes up the Mississippi valley I have seen small flocks frequently on Long Island, during that season. They were partial to brackish backwaters of salt meadows. Its habits and call notes are quite similar to its larger relative, differing only in size. They are less shy and I have had them walk within a few feet of me when I was sitting openly on a bank.

One May day, while eating lunch on Carnarsie meadows, two YELLOWLEGS walked gracefully toward me and proceeded to "show off" by bathing, preening and bobbing. The ablutions were so enthusiastic that the birds were completely hidden in spray during the apex of the performance.

Many a morning saw me gliding across Shinnecock Bay toward the "Hole in the Wall" where decoys were set out and "Bay Snipe" whistled to destruction. What was once considered "sport" becomes in retrospect gratuitous slaughter.
