Arizona Woodpecker

Dryobates arizonae

This rare, unusually colored, Woodpecker is found in mountains of New Mexico and Arizona at elevations between 4500 and 8000 feet. What little description we have of their habits indicates that they are extremely tame and show no fear of man or beast.

Swarth tells of one which thot his horse's legs were trees and pecked industriously until the owner of said legs drove the driller off by kicking and plunging.
