Black Oystercatcher

Haematopus bachmani

These are the least wary of the genus. Bent says that they fit inconspicuously into the dark and gloomy rocks of the Aleutian Islands.

Courting is accompanied with a grotesque series of awkward bowings, with necks arched so weirdly as to change the entire appearance of the performers.

They walk with bobbing heads and fly sluggishly, a few rapid wing beats being followed by sailing flight. They are social, often whistling to one another altho separated by quite a distance.

BREEDING

Similar to other members of the genus.

RANGE

Pacific Coast of North America.
