Burrowing Owl

Speotyto cunicularia hypogaea

A visitor to Prairiedog Town is often received by polite bowing from these curious little playmates of the western woodchucks. Dog society is only sought for a convenient ready-dug home. In loose soil the Owls "dig their own" — sometimes seven feet of tunnel with a single room at the end.

Captive birds exhibit extraordinary appetites and usually finish not only all food offered but their associates' provender as well. Their politeness is only feather-deep. Their voracity is probably unequalled by any other bird of their size.
