Southern Rocky mountain region. Breeds mainly in Transition zone in Utah, Colorado and western Texas. Winters from southern Utah and Colorado southward. Accidental in Iowa.

A 20–30 foot tree, distributed near streams, in glades and wood margins from Newfoundland thru the St. Lawrence valley to Rainy and Assiniboine river vallies, the southern shores of Lake Manitoba and southeastern Minnesota.
