Crested Auklet

Aethia cristatella

Altho a staple food of Aleuts, CRESTED AUKLETS are one of the commonest of the genus, swarming in thousands around some northern islands. The single egg usually is so well hidden among gigantic volcanic "pebbles" that no enemy can reach it.

Beach fleas or fish are plentiful. Starvation is no menace. The birds probably live longer than forest species and one child a year is enuf when Death forgets to notch its arrows.
