Graycrown Rosy Finch

Leucosticte tephrocotis tephrocotis

The art of self-preservation reaches a climax among ROSY FINCHES. When terrific snow blizzards sweep mountains where they exist, the hardy feathered gnomes seek a sheltered crevice until cold and wind yield to fair weather.

Even at timber line there is some insect life. Facing the wind with fluffed feathers, they glean along the edge of snow banks and get ample food for they are always plump and cheerful. They migrate vertically in minor climate changes and south when full Winter sets in.

Nidification occurs in early Spring in high altitudes.

EGGS: pure white: 3–5.
