A team of dedicated board members, volunteers, and student interns has published every page in Volume 9. This volume includes 360 images of paintings and lyrical descriptions of birds, now available online for everyone to enjoy anywhere in the world. This is a monumental task. Each volume requires approximately 400 hours to photograph, edit, transcribe, catalog, and publish online. We need your support to complete this work.
If you're tech-savvy, have a good eye, are meticulous with details, and love structured data, please consider volunteering by emailing us at hello@rexbrasher.org.
We encourage all bird lovers and supporters to consider a monetary donation to support our mission to make Rex's work available for everyone. You can provide a one-time or recurring donation online.
Immaculate in plumage — black of heart, this is the most vicious and murderous of the Heron family. Untamable, fierce and bloodthirsty, they use their dagger bill with Moro accuracy on any living thing. Cats, dogs, birds, even human beings, are not safe within range of their piston stiletto. This prowess, combined with great wariness, insures their continued hold on existence.
I have seen them but once — four statues, magnificent in the heat-haze of Loggerhead Key, Florida. Before the sloop was within a quarter of a mile, they rose with measured wingbeats and disappeared far over the waters of Barnes Sound.
NEST — a flat well-made platform of sticks with smaller inside cavity lined with fine twigs and leaves; located on horizontal branches of trees about 20 feet above water.
EGGS — 3 to 5; pale blue green.
Southern Florida.
