Hairy Woodpecker

Dryobates villosus villosus

The woodpile had been cut a year ahead and chopping was a casual performance usually dependent upon weather. No matter where I went ahill, one or more big HAIRIES always hove into sight when the ax commenced ringing. One bird became quite tame and took one end of a tree while I worked on the other — probably thot I was just another species! Their home was in an old Golden Sweet appletree and on short Winter days I often saw them both retire for the night about four o'clock. In 1928 the tree collapsed and the birds have not returned.
