Willard states the male's notes are like the mewing of a small lonely kitten, frequently made more heartrending by drawing out the "me-ow" with fuller volume. One, perched upon a madrone tree, kept the song (?) going for thirteen and one-half minutes at the rate of one a second, without apparent breathing pause.
