Lapland Longspur

Calcarius lapponicus lapponicus

LONGSPURS are among the few birds which sing for minutes at a time while awing. Many small birds have a short air song but few continue their solo for an extended period.

On the northern tundra and barrens they give a wonderful touch of life when they rise and sink like butterflies, filling the air with bubbling music almost equal to the tinkling melody of the Bobolink.

The wings are adjusted in formation, with such accuracy that the birds sink slowly like tiny parachutes.
