Northern Eider

Somateria mollissima borealis

This American representative of the common European Eider is similar in habits to the Eider but is more northern in distribution.

Captain MacMillan says that in the winter of 1921–22 great numbers of Arctic foxes crossed on ice from Baffin Island to Ungava and Labrador shores and almost exterminated these Ducks. They were saved from complete destruction by Eskimo trappers and the fact that foxes did not repeat their migration in succeeding winters.

BREEDING

Similar to Eider. Old nests of Brant and Gulls sometimes used.

RANGE

Northeastern North America.
