Mountains of southern California and northern Lower California. Breeds mainly in Transition zone from mountains of southern Los Angeles county to San Pedro Martir mountains.

A tree averaging 50 feet with short, heavy trunk (3 to 5 feet), distributed at 4,000 to 5,000 feet on the dry slopes of Eagle and Limpio mountains of Texas, west along the desert ranges of New Mexico and Arizona south of the Colorado plateau and north to lower slopes of higher parts of northern Arizona.
