This bird puzzled my youthful ornithological knowledge for a long time. I often heard a weak, uncertain trill coming from open meadows where there was no bird in sight. One day the mystery was cleared when I saw the bird singing on the ground — so carried away by love ardor that he didn't care who was near. The strange weak song preceded by a buzz was given continuously with a beady eye cocked inquiringly at me, during intermissions as tho he wanted to know what I thot of the performance. Audible commendation did not scare him away — he just wanted an audience!
