





These crossbarred citizens of the arid southwest are closely akin to Downy Woodpeckers in habits, altho the warm country makes them less energetic than northern birds.
Southeastern California, east thru southern Nevada, Colorado and Utah to central Texas.

A short-trunk tree, 60 to 80 feet high. Distributed thru central and southern states, on Biscayne Bay shores, Florida, in Bermuda and Lower Ohio River Basin where it is abundant and unusually large. Common in Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas.
