Tree Sparrow

Spizella monticola monticola

Altho weed seeds are nearly always available, these children of the north can be lured to a grain table. Under normal conditions they have all left the latitude of Massachusetts by May but a few have become so accustomed to our spread that they do not depart until the shadbush blooms.

One of a flock breakfasting on the porch flew to the lilac bush, tinkled its thanks then fell to the ground. I could find no injury on the little body. It had heard the camel's bell and gone west on the chime.
