Mr. Waldow is a retired machinist and mechanic who worked in the airline and pharmaceutical industries, as well as repairing cars and fixing furnaces. He is a recognized expert on the early iron industry in the Eastern U.S. He located, photographed, and researched the history for the majority of the smelting locations. He has further recorded this data and rendered the furnaces in his own paintings. He worked closely with Ed Kirby, who has written several books about the iron industry in the Northeast.
In recent years, Mr. Waldow has started painting, so his appreciation for Rex Brasher’s work has grown. In his years of tromping through the countryside trying to find blast furnaces, he developed an abiding interest in the environment, and he fully supports the RBA’s mission to use Brasher’s art to educate people about the need to protect it.
